Our lovely client came in with medium-length, solid black hair looking for a change that was bold, modern, and uniquely their own. After a thorough consultation, we decided to dive headfirst into one of the coolest hair movements taking over the industry right now: Ghost Roots.

You’ve likely seen this edgy style popping up all over your social feeds. Popularized by trendsetters like Billie Eilish, the “ghost root” trend flips traditional hair coloring on its head. Instead of having dark roots that blend into lighter ends, this look features dramatically lighter, vibrant, or bleached roots that contrast sharply with the rest of the hair. It’s rebellious, low-maintenance on the ends, and makes an instant statement.
The Process: A Triple Process Creative Color
Transforming hair from a solid black to a precise, multi-toned creative look is a technical journey. To achieve this safely while maintaining the health of the hair, we booked this transformation as a Triple Process Creative Color.
Here’s why a triple process was essential for this look:

Process 1: Lifting the Black Base & Mid-Lengths – Black pigments (especially if previously colored) are notoriously stubborn. The first step required carefully lifting the mid-lengths to ends to clear out the dark base and lay the groundwork for our dimensional brown.

Process 2: Bleaching the Roots – Next, we isolated the root area and applied a precise bleach application to lift the roots to a clean, pale blonde canvas, ensuring we created that sharp, intentional “ghost” contrast.

Process 3: Toning & Depositing – Finally, we went in with a dual-formulation technique. We toned the bleached roots to a seamless, icy platinum “ghost” shade, while simultaneously depositing a gorgeous, rich, single-tone lighter brown throughout the main body of the hair down to the ends.
