Client Spotlight: The Reverse Dip-Dye With An Alt-Edge

We are absolutely obsessed with the creativity our clients bring to the chair, and today’s spotlight is no exception. While we usually see the classic dark-to-light gradient or bright pops of vivid color on the tips, this client wanted something a little more mysterious, moody, and completely custom.

Instead of a traditional dip-dye, we flipped the script to create a stunning, reverse-ombré effect that perfectly marries high-fashion drama with an alternative edge.

The Look: Deep Cherry & Inky Black

This gorgeous look was crafted on medium-to-long hair with long, flowing layers. The hair features an incredibly rich, uniform dark cherry red from the roots all the way through the mid-lengths.

But here is where the twist comes in: instead of fading into a lighter shade or a bright neon, the vibrant cherry seamlessly melts into a sharp, inky black at the tips.

To tie the whole look together and give it an effortless, face-framing frame, we carried that same gradient onto their long curtain bangs. The bangs start as that beautiful, glowing cherry red at the top and melt perfectly into black tips right at the cheekbones. The result is graphic, dimensional, and completely mesmerizing when the hair moves.

Who This Look Best Suits

Could you pull off the reverse cherry-black dip-dye? This style is incredibly versatile, but it’s an absolute match made in heaven for:

  • The Alt-Glam Aesthetic: If your wardrobe features a lot of black, leather, or jewel tones, this hair color functions as the ultimate accessory.

  • Layered & Textured Cuts: The long layers and curtain bangs are what make this color dance. If you love a blowout, effortless waves, or shag-inspired texture, the contrast between the cherry and black will pop beautifully.

  • Low-Maintenance Root Lovers: Because the base color is a uniform, deep cherry red, it grows out much more gracefully than a look that requires pale blonde roots.

The Service: What to Request

Achieving a seamless melt between a rich, vibrant tone like cherry red and a solid, saturated black requires meticulous blending and sectioning. This is not your average single-process color!

To get a look like this, you will need to book a Double Process Creative Color.

Behind the scenes: Crafting this look involves a multi-step application. We first establish the rich cherry canvas, and then carefully hand-paint or block out the ends with a specialized placement to ensure the black tips look intentional and blended, rather than blocked off or muddy.
